Digital Lab

For some years now has been developed the concept of the "Paperless Laboratory" – the Paperless Lab. However, this concept has not had much success nor reaped much acceptance in the laboratory means less automated. It was implemented in some laboratories of pharmaceutical and clinical analyses but presents a reduced ability to be implement in more traditional laboratories, where analytical instrumentation levels are still very low and where many of the laboratory activities continue to be traditional bench activities.

  • If the original information is Digital it should remain digital.
  • If the information produced is Digital it should remain digital.
  • if we have analog information (on paper) it should be converted into Digital.
  • All Digital information should cycle through digital means.

One of the creators of the Paperless concept Laboratory, Scott Jenkins of IBM, spoke in 4 other principles:

  • Get the data directly from the source!
  • Eliminate transcriptions and (re) Validations!
  • know where is the data going!
  • know what to do with the info!

By following these simple rules and on the basis of a LIMS that can interact with the various existing information systems in the laboratory is possible, and easy, to create the Digital Lab. Ambidata structure

A smart document is the dematerialized form of a paper document! The Smart documents allow you to dismiss all paper inputs and at the same time proactively manage their processes and workflows giving a new life to the document by its conversion into digital format. As can be observed in the following image, we have as main areas:

  • Workflow and responsibilities: allows you to configure the various activities of the process and the level of intervention of employees in each one;
  • Tracking: implements a total traceability system that records the various versions of the information for each record, as well as whom and when there was any intervention in the process;
  • Automatic notifications: the process automatically sends notifications to whom is involved in the process so that they are aware of their activities and can intervention rapidly;
  • Validation and security: the system only allows the involvement of employees defined in its intervention area. Also ensures that they can only intervene when their activity is triggered;
  • Document Transporter: allows the transport of digital documents and their automatic interconnection with document management.

Ambidata Framework

Ambidata Framework is a software development framework where all Ambidata applications are built on. Defines a set of architectural rules at which all modules must obey and provides a set of components and processes that are transversal to all modules of a solution. Its main pillars can be seen in the following Figure:

The architecture consists of an executable (.exe) file that enables you to orchestrate all the components of a solution. This executable, as well as all development, It is based on the Microsoft .Net framework.

The architecture has a requirement that all modules are developed in three layers, taking advantage of the separation of concepts:

  • Interface layer-where presentation services are located and interaction with the user. All processing that has to do with the user interface is done here;
  • Business layer – the treatment of system rules;
  • Data Layer-sets the bridge between business rules and database. Generate all requests for information to the database (insert, change, delete and query information).
Ambidata structure

In this type of architecture, the layers communicate with each other through an order that cannot be changed: the presentation layer invokes business layer features , which in turn may have need to call features of the data tier. It is not possible to directly invoke the presentation layer data tier or business rules invoking objects presentation.

Any module based on this Framework is required to inherit from base classes available in the architecture, automatically forcing layer development.
The legacy of these components offers, in a simple way, a set of good practices that accelerate the development, guarantee the quality of the solutions and the uniformity of development, such as:

  • Access Security
  • Operation modes (create, change, cancel, consult and print)
  • Visual components
  • Data access
  • Logging
  • Etc.

The Framework contains a set of concepts that allow you to create or adapt a solution to a particular organization. These are essentially extensibility concepts about:

  • Configuration – the framework enables you to configure a large part of concepts offering the implementer modules parameterization;
  • Designer-rapid creation of business processes;
  • Vertical modules-allows the coupling of root modules, since these satisfy the rules of the framework. The modules are then configured in the framework and dynamically instantiated by reflection.

In order to relate all modules and ensure that the processes flow in accordance with the needs of an organization, there is the process Configurator.
